Book description
his work provides a breakthrough study of tourism. The authors set out to show how people developed facilities, accommodation and transport, and then how publicity and government support followed. Davidson and Spearritt demonstrate that it provides an important dimension to the social and environmental history of Australia. They are very much concerned with depicting the changing context of tourism: from a pastime of the rich, to the intervention of government in the early years of the century, and its new, explicitly-made connection with immigration and railways.

About the author
Professor Peter Spearritt was foundation director of the National Key Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University. He was also Head of the School of Political and Social Inquiry at Monash.
