Deadlock or democracy : the future of the Senate Edited by Brian Costar Published by UNSW Press (2000) |
Book description
How should senators be elected? Are the smaller parties and independents weilding too much power?
Is the Senate the only chamber where genuine discussion can take place? These questions are fuelling
a heated debate about the future of the Senate.
This timely book brings together four important contributions to the discussion. Liberal Senator Helen
Coonan argues that the present structure of the Senate undermines the capacity of governments to
govern effectively. Vigorous rejoinders come from the Australian Democrats leader Meg Lees, Labor's
Senator John Faulkner, and the outspoken Clerk of the Senate, Harry Evans. Together they put forward
the major points of view about the future of Australia's unique upper house.
