Research methods for students and professionals : information management and systems
By Kirsty Williamson with Amanda Bow ... [et al.]
Published by Centre for Information Studies, Charles Sturt University (2000)

Book description

This is not just another book on research methods. It is unique in including information systems research, usually ignored in books on research in librarianship and information management. In some respects this is a traditional research methods textbook but the examples and cases included are drawn from the disciplines of the title, including archives and records. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are covered. The main author, Kirsty Williamson, has put together a team of excellent contributors, mostly academic staff in the School of Information Management & Systems at Monash University, drawing on their varied experience of research and research supervision. This book is an introduction to research methods, put firmly in the context of professional practice in information management and systems. It is designed primarily for use in research methods subjects in the university schools of librarianship/ information management/ information studies/ information systems in Australasia and elsewhere, but should also be of interest to relevant practitioners who have an interest in research. Most chapters are suitable for undergraduates or postgraduates. The level is introductory, making this an accessible text for those who have little or no background in research methods.

Australian schools of library and information studies, archives, records management and information systems - all of whose students will benefit from this text ... which recognises the convergence of these professions and includes many examples ... is certainly timely. The strengths of this work include its coverage of a very wide range of methods, clear and straightforward explanations of often quite complex issues, and simple, useful diagrams... this is a worthwhile, well written text which should, and undoubtedly will, join postgraduate reading lists across the country. For many, it could well be a first choice. Australian Academic and Research Libraries.
