Book description
This book is a revised version of the PhD thesis: Aspects of the Grammaticalisation of Hypothetical Modality, which the author completed in 1997 at Monash University, and has been updated with a new study (Chapter 3), undertaken after the original thesis was written.
This book investigates the differences in grammar used by English native speakers and other speakers of English as a second language. The examples used in the book was based on studies on the use of English by Singaporeans who have Chinese-Mandarin origin. Discussed in detail was the emphasis on the uses of "would" and "will".
