Engines of influence : newspapers of country Victoria, 1840-1890 By Elizabeth Morrison Published by Melbourne University Publishing (2005) |
Book description
Engines of Influence presents a fifty-year history of Victoria's
country newspapers. It begins with James Harrison's Geelong Advertiser
published in 1840 and ends in December 1890 when 166 papers were being published
in 122 country towns. It highlights the major part played by country
newspapers in helping to construct the machinery of government, lay the
foundations of party politics and to foster a sense of rural Victorian identity.
