Book description
As twice pregnant mother and committed keeper of the material given and the plurality of Earth, Anne Elvey brings the sensitivity and passion of experience, careful critical analysis and a poetic play of words and metaphors into a complex web of dialogue with a wide range of critical theory and biblical text in her ecological feminist reading of the Gospel of Luke. She provides, therefore, a critical reading of the Lucan text which will take its place among the variety of approaches to that gospel. Her web of analysis is enhanced by dialogue with critical theorists from a number of disciplines, a dialogue that augments her reading paradigm with further metaphors not only in initial chapters but throughout the work as a whole. In this too she stands on a cutting edge of biblical scholarship represented in The Bible and Critical Theory Seminar co-ordinated by Roland Boer (also from Monash University) of which Elvey is a member and in its new e-journal, The Bible and Critical Theory.
This book is a ground-breaking work not only in its providing an integrated and integrative paradigm for an ecofeminist reading of the biblical text but also in its engagement with critical thinkers and in the creative, poetic and prophetic reading of the Gospel of Luck which will catch up its reader into its web of new meaning. Other scholars will be able to bring this paradigm for reading and meaning making to a wide range of biblical texts in ways which, it is hoped, will increase the human community's attentiveness to the material given of woman and Earth within the intricate web of ecological interconnectedness.
