Book description
The two papers in this collection are developed from talks presented at a public symposium organised by the Monash Asia Institute in November 2002. The objective of that seminar was to bring together Australian expertise on how Afghanistan had served for centuries as a conduit for the movement of people, ideas, beliefs, artifacts and trade commodities between Asia and Europe. The timing of the seminar was important because it provided the authors with an opportunity to reflect on the more positive aspects of the history of the old Silk Road that linked Roman Europe to China via, amongst other places, Afghanistan. The contributors were keen to refocus attention on some of the forgotten aspects of Afghanistan's history and achievements.
