Book description
This book was written for educators - for those who are
teachers at home and at school, for those who are now teaching and those who
are preparing to teach. It was written to help these teachers
understand how some children can grow to have developing minds that process
information quickly, with integration of a broad range of ideas and sources,
and that find connections in ways that are complex and new. These
learners can produce ideas that are unusual and deeply important to them and
can find solutions in ways that are unique. These are gifted learners
in need of teachers who can create environments and experiences that can
provide challenges to foster their exploration of the inner and outer worlds
of their lives. These are children and youth who have the amazing
possibility to use their minds fully and who can grow to become leaders,
creators, innovators, contributors, and fully functioning human beings.
There are also those we refer to as talented children, who have not yet
developed the characteristics and behaviours of the children we call gifted,
but who show promise of developing such abilities.
To understand how to teach these gifted and talented children, we must begin
by learning all we can about them, how they became gifted, and what it is
like to be gifted or talented. To be successful in guiding them
further toward developing their abilities, we must understand how the brain
works and what we can do to optimise its growth and development. We
need to understand our options for helping children grow at home and at
school, to know what others have done before, and to be aware of what
choices we have now. We will also become better teachers, able to
generate important and successful lessons beyond those contained in this
book.
