Book description
Families, Relationships and Intimate Life is a lively, accessible and comprehensive introduction to the sociology of the family.  The book thoroughly explores the controversies, contradictions and broad patterns that characterise contemporary relationships and families.
One of the great strengths of the book is its consideration of diversity and the factors that contribute to the re-shaping of families and relationships, including new technologies, social mobility and demographic change.  All of the key stages in the life courses are covered: childhood, youth, partnering, parenting and ageing, as are both the positive and negative aspects of family life, including intimacy and violence.
Contemporary examples are included throughout the book, together with critical questions and thought-provoking visual images to encourage readers to examine what is often taken for granted in their everyday lives.
