Book description
In the mid-1990s, almost three quarters of CEOs either died in office or retired.  Today, the majority are being asked to leave their job.  The market now is moving so fast and unpredictably that leaders soon lose their relevance.  The chapters in Contemporary Perspectives on Leadership show us how leaders deal with issues, and how they develop talents and strategies for getting the best out of their people.
Good leadership is based on the ability to create direction, focus and meaning in times of ambiguity and anxiety.  Good leadership is about building or rebuilding a culture of trust in our organisations.  Building trust requires leaders of character who are in tune with their environment, who listen to others, who are open to new information, and who are not easily swayed by uninformed public opinion.
Leadership is as much about knowing what you stand for as it is about knowing what you won't stand for.  The research shows that thinking of oneself as a leader is an important motivator for acting as a leader and for further developing leadership skills. You need to have a healthy sense of your own destiny and power to influence change.  And you need to think of others first.
Contemporary Perspectives on Leadership is about keeping us up-to-date on the research and practice of leadership during dynamic times, in organisation as well as in our everyday lives, as individuals and as members of groups, as leaders and as followers.  The contributors to Contemporary Perspectives on Leadership show us that the skills required to lead in this changing workplace are multifaceted and demanding, but that there are some approaches that hold fast regardless of the circumstances or the objectives.
