Census of Housing and Population 2001

Where to begin

  1. See 2001 Census Help
  2. Decide which table you require, and at what Geographic Level. You may need to look at Maps on AusStats (AusStats > Publications & Data > 2001 Census > Maps (paper)) or on CDROM (SLA maps ASGC [electronic resource], (2001, release one), Australian Bureau of Statistics, Canberra)
  3. Select the most appropriate product from those numbered 1 to 5 below.

1. CDATA2001 (with Mapinfo)

Includes:
Basic Community Profile: 33 tables to Collection District level
Time series Profile: 22 tables of comparative data across the last 3 census's (1991, 1996, 2001) to Statistical Local Area Level with sophisticated mapping software and the ability to import and map data and manipulate data.

When and why to use CDATA2001

  • to create maps
  • perform calculations on the data
  • select parts of a community profile eg 'birthplace korea by sex', instead of, 'all birthplaces by sex'
  • when you want a part of a table for a large number of geographic areas
  • import your own data to make maps or tables
  • to create your own geographic areas

2. CDATA2001 via AusStats

Includes (all files in zipped spreadsheet format):

  • Basic Community Profiles and snapshots - geographic areas available:
    Main ASGC areas to Collection District Level-CD's, Local Government areas - LGA's, State suburbs, Postal Areas, Statistical districts, Commonwealth Electoral Divisions, State Electoral Divisions, Sections of State, Urban Centre's and Localities, Remoteness areas
  • Indigenous Profile - Geographic areas available: Indigenous Geography, ASGC Main areas down to SLA level, LGA's, Remoteness areas
  • Time Series Profile - Geographic areas available: Main ASGC areas, LGA's Statistical Districts
  • Usual Residence Profile - Geographic areas available: Main ASGC areas to CD Level, LGA's Statistical Districts, Postal Areas
  • Expanded Community Profile - Geographic areas available: Main ASGC areas to SLA level, LGA's Statistical Districts
  • Working Population Profile - Geographic areas available: Main ASGC areas, LGA's and Journey to work study areas.
  • Classification Counts - Total count for all census categories for Australia, States and some for capital cities.

When to use it:

  • to quickly and easily view all the tables within a community profile for one geographic area
  • to save a community profile quickly and easily in spreadsheet format

Finding Statistical Local Areas and Collection Districts

To get to Geographical areas not listed on the first menu, eg Statistical Local Areas, start with Australia and go to the bottom of the page where narrower geographic areas are listed. Keep going until you get to the geographic area you require.

3. CLIB2001 on CD-ROM

Available at multiple locations. CLIB2001 has all the same information that is available on AusStats, but with slightly more flexibility in terms of selecting and combining data from a few areas at once

When you want to quickly and easily find more general data for broader geographic areas, from Statistical Local area level to state and Australia

Printed publications

See catalogue for locations. In the Matheson Library printed census publications are held at the beginning of the Reference collection.

5. SEIFA - Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas 2001

SEIFA uses information from the Census on employment, income, education, housing etc. to create indexes relating to the socio-economic wellbeing of Australian communities and areas of advantage and disadvantage. SEIFA 2001 consists of four separate indexes that each concentrate on a different aspect of the social and economic conditions in an area.

When to use it:

When you want a comparative indication of social advantage / disadvantage across a number of areas

Where is it?

SEIFA is only available at Caulfield Campus Library. Ask at the information desk.

Regional Statistics - from the left Menu bar on the ABS home page select Main areas by Name or by Map location.
The National Regional Profile (NRP) presents a brief statistical summary of key economic and social information for various levels of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC). Broad indicators shown cover Population, Births and Deaths, Unemployment, Income Support Customers, Taxable Income, Building Approvals, Motor Vehicle Sales and Agriculture. The NRP has been designed to assist users of regional statistics to understand the broad composition and structure of a region and to enable easy comparison across regions of Australia. The Profile is available for Statistical Local Areas, Local Government Areas, Statistical Subdivisions, Statistical Divisions and states and territories.
