Guidelines and automated tools

Content guidelines

  • Using Dublin Core (Hillmann 2005) is intended as an entry point for users of Dublin Core. For non-specialists, it will assist them in creating simple descriptive records for information resources (for example, electronic documents). Specialists may find the document a useful point of reference to the documentation of Dublin Core, as it changes and grows.
  • Guidelines for the Creation of Content for Resource Discovery Metadata (NLA / State Library of Tasmania, updated version of 2002 print publication). The guidelines provide advice on determining the content for the Dublin Core / AGLS metadata elements that are most useful for resource discovery.
  • Draft CMS Metadata Elements and Guidelines outlines metadata element standards and guidelines for the creation of quality, consistent metadata in order to find, reuse, manage and maintain web content in the Monash University Teamsite Content Management System.

Encoding guidelines

Simple or qualified Dublin Core may be expressed in a number of syntax formats: HTML / XHTML, RDF / XML, XML. More information about how to encode DCMES in any of these formats can be found in syntax-specific DCMI Encoding Guidelines.

Automated tools and software

A list of semi-automated and automated tools including utilities, templates, editors, generators, converters to assist with the creation and maintenance of metadata can be found at the Tools and Software page at the DCMI website.
