Notes: This publication republishes, in a thoroughly indexed collection, detailed first hand accounts of thousands of trials ranging from murder and treason to adultery, libel and commercial disputes brought together from major libraries into a unified collection for the first time. Most of these are verbatim transcripts of what was said in court. From 1790-1850 when the government was suppressing the activities of political radicals, many accounts of trials for treason, sedition and riot were printed providing a telling record of face to face political confrontation. It offers historians an opportunity to study almost every aspect of social and economic life between the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of these were originally published as separate books or pamphlets for sale to the general public at large.
