Notes: These records are maintained by the Bureau of Far Eastern Affairs in connection with the outbreak of hostilities in Korea and the subsequent armistice negotiations. Included are a series of documents prepared by the Division of Historical Policy Research on the background of the conflict, the major events leading to U.S. intervention and American policy with respect to the limitations of hostilities. There is also a copy of the "Korean Black Book on Cease Fire" which documents the telegraphic exchanges between General Matthew Ridgway and the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the general armistice policy. Also included are general Subject files consisting of inter- and intradepartmental memoranda of conversations, position papers, minutes of meetings, operations memoranda, copies of U.S. Army telegrams, and "Official Informal" correspondence between the Department of State and foreign service officials. The records cover all aspects of Korean internal and external affairs and Korean-American relations. They detail U.S. military, political, and economic aid to Korea.
