Notes: On the 6 rolls of microfilm are reproduced 14 volumes that contain brief despatches addressed to the Department of State by the U.S. consular officials at Batavia, Java, Netherlands East Indies, between September 25, 1818 and July 23, 1906. The despatches with a few exceptions are arranged in a chronological order.
At the beginning for roll 1, are reproduced selected pages from 20 State Department registers of correspondence that constitute a register of despatches from Batavia between May 30, 1831 and July 23, 1906. Interspersed throughout the series are such documents as occasional memoranda prepared by other State Department officials and communications from private citizens of the United States.
