Notes: The opium trade has played a major part in the economic history of the Far East. After World War II, it was decided that a system of controls was needed to clamp down on the trade of all narcotic drugs. A commission was appointed to investigate the issue under the auspices of the United Nations. During 1945-1948, this commission investigated the social, economic and political ramifications of new proposals and legislation. This collection includes the British Foreign Office files on this investigation. It provides details about the activities and findings of the Commission. Topics covered include: the drug situation in unoccupied China; cocaine manufacture in Peru; the opium trade in Hong Kong, the hashish campaign in Syria and Lebanon, annual statistics for Sudan; and many others. Countries covered are: Afghanistan, Borneo, Burma, Ceylon, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Lebanon, Malaysia, the Phillippines, Sarawak, Singapore, and Syria.
