Monash alumni to access electronic resources

Monash graduates around the world will soon be able to enjoy access to significant online resources via the Monash University Library.

In response to popular demand the library has negotiated a six-month trial with major database vendor, Proquest, to provide alumni with access to online databases.

From mid-July until the end of 2003 alumni who have paid for library membership will be able to access research materials previously restricted to current Monash staff and students.

"Proquest is a vendor of databases covering a broad range of disciplines including business, law, sciences, medicine, social sciences, education, pharmacy and engineering," said library commercial services manager, Margaret Pratt.

"We are one of the first university libraries in Australia to be able to offer this kind of service to our alumni and we hope to be able to build on this service after the initial trial."

Ms Pratt said providing continued access to scholarly information fits well with the library's mission to enable lifelong learning among Monash graduates.

Alumni relations coordinator, Michelle Pearson, said the trial was sure to prove popular with graduates given the number of requests the Monash University Alumni Office had received regarding online access to electronic resources.

Monash MBA Alumni Association president, John Carruthers, supported this sentiment.

"More than 60% of MBA alumni rated continued access to on-line business research post-graduation as 'highly important' in the association's recent survey," said Mr Carruthers.

Alumni members of the library will be able to access the databases for personal education purposes from any internet-enabled computer anywhere in the world (using Internet Explorer or Netscape 4.0 or higher) until the trial period ends.

Alumni library members can call the library to arrange a password.

Alumni who are not current library members can join now and enjoy membership privileges for twelve months, including access to databases until the end of December.

Towards the end of the trial the library will seek feedback from alumni library members to inform decisions regarding continuation and scope of the service.
