Malaysian librarians train at Monash

A training program for librarians from Malaysia is currently underway at Monash University Library.

Twelve participants from Monash University Malaysia and the Librarians’ Association of Malaysia (Persatuan Pustakawan Malaysia) arrived in Melbourne on 7 June for the three-week program.

Director of Corporate Services and International Development, Chooi Hon Ho, explained that the training program would focus on delivery of library services in the digital era and includes a joint seminar with the School of Information Management Systems.

Mrs Ho said that the tailor-made training programs conducted by Monash University Library staff were the subject of increasing interest from library professionals outside of Monash.

“Other organisations recognise Monash University Library as a leader in applying new technologies to delivering library services and want to benefit from our knowledge and experience,” said Mrs Ho.

“We have conducted training programs for librarians from our Malaysian campus for several years and the programs were so successful that participants told others in the library sector about it and soon enough we were being approached by library organisations in Malaysia with requests to open our training program to non-Monash participants.”

“Monash University is a deservedly well-respected name in Malaysia, and this program provides an opportunity to strengthen our ties with the Malaysian community,” said University Librarian, Cathrine Harboe-Ree.

“We are pleased to have our Malaysian colleagues with us and hope that they find the experience rewarding.”
