New way to access newspapers online

Library users in the habit of reading newspapers online will have noticed some changes to access.

Previously, access to key Australian newspapers like The Age and the Australian Financial Review was provided via the library’s subscription to the popular database LexisNexis.

Since mid 2004 LexisNexis has not been able to provide access to those newspapers due to the expiry of their licensing agreements with newspaper publishers.

“To ensure Monash students and staff can continue to use these popular resources the Library has taken out subscriptions to two other databases for online newspaper access,” said Digital Resources Librarian, David Groenewegen.

To access newspapers online go to:

  • eLibrary (also known as Electric Library)
  • Factiva (works only in I.E. 5.5/Netscape 6 or above)

Both databases contain full text of all major Victorian newspapers, as well as many from interstate and overseas.

Mr Groenewegen explained that the change did not affect the library's subscription to the legal database Lexis.com, which was a separate product.
