Sun Books shine in exhibition

A selection of more than 100 publications produced by Sun Books, renowned Australian publisher of the 1960s and 70s, will be on display from Wednesday 1 June 2005 .

"The Monash University Library Rare Books Collection is very fortunate in having received the gift of an archival set of the publications from one of the original founders of Sun Books, Mr Brian Stonier AO and from John Arnold, of the Monash University School of Political and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Arts," said rare books librarian, Richard Overell.

The gift consists of several hundred books ranging from novels and books of poetry through areas such as art, sex, health, parenthood, cookery, crime and politics.

All Monash staff and students are invited to attend the exhibition opening, at 5:45pm , Wednesday 1 June in the exhibition room on level 1 at the Sir Louis Matheson Library on the Clayton campus. To RSVP email richard.overell@lib.monash.edu.au or telephone 03 9905 2689 by 30 May, 2005 .

Mr Stonier, now a successful vigneron, will give an address at the opening and has generously donated a dozen bottles of wine from Stoniers Vineyard at Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula.

Mr Overell said Mr Stonier, and co-founder Geoffrey Dutton, who established Sun Books in 1965, were the people who had originally set up Penguin Australia , and the Sun Books range is "on the same grand scale as Penguin."

"The books form an important resource for the study of Australian publishing history, and indeed for the study of Australian culture during that period," he said.

Among their best-known publications on display are the Barry McKenzie comic books, Geoffrey Blainey's Tyranny of Distance, and Geoffrey Chandler's book on the Bogle-Chandler case, So you think I did it.

The exhibition will run from 1 June to 31 August 2005 .

A virtual exhibition and PDF of the catalogue will be made available on the library's exhibitions webpages after the opening. Printed catalogues can also be obtained by emailing lorraine.david@lib.monash.edu.au
