New database highlights Monash Asian studies

A major database for research on Southeast Asia, now available to library users, highlights Monash's research output in the field of Asian studies.

The Southeast Asian Serials (SASI) database, accessible from the library's databases web page, has recently been updated to include hundreds of entries for publications of the Monash Asia Institute.

"SASI is an online index of articles in English and Southeast Asian languages about Southeast Asia, and is the only database to provide access to the contents of a large number of major Indonesian academic and current affairs serials," said Senior Asian Studies Librarian, Dr Aline Scott-Maxwell.

Monash had recently become the third contributing partner to the database, initially created by the Australian National University Library and subsequently a joint project with the Library of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, Dr Scott-Maxwell explained.

Dr Scott-Maxwell said the library and the Monash Asia Institute had worked together to include publications from the Monash Asia Institute's Centre of Southeast Asian Studies.

Monash Asia Institute publications now included in the database, many of them by Monash authors, cover issues as diverse as environmental protection, student rebellion, prostitution, war, folk tales, religion and politics.

The most recent Monash Asia Institute publication to be added to the database is by Monash PhD student Mary O'Kane, informed by her fieldwork with refugee women from ethnic minority groups in Burma .

Many of the publications indexed in the database are housed in the Asian Studies Research Collection in the Sir Louis Matheson Library on the Clayton campus.
