Berwick Library to undergo transformation

Services on the Berwick campus are about to be transformed, with refurbishment of the Berwick Library to incorporate the campus's IT computer labs and service desk commencing on 1 October 2005.

The result will be the Berwick Library and Learning Commons, scheduled for completion by February 2006.

Facilities and Services offices and a tutorial room will be removed and the library will be expanded into the current internal walkway to make room for an additional 40 computers, including a training room, raising the total number of computers to 70.

Furniture and layout within the library and learning commons will also be improved to better accommodate different modes of study, including group and quiet study and study using computers.

"The purpose of the project is to provide a better, more convenient service and facility for users. Staff at a combined service desk will provide answers to both library and IT questions; and resources, both electronic and print, in a single, purpose-built space," said library project co-ordinator, Janette Burke.

"Staff will also 'roam' the space, providing on-the-spot assistance and answers to users at their point of need."

Ms Burke said the project was a joint effort, with Student, Community and Shared Services Division, Facilities and Services, Berwick Campus, ITS and the Library to create a learning commons precinct to include the bookshop and cafe around the village green.

Ms Burke said the library and ITS were also working to provide a single system for paying for printing and photocopying and security, furniture and laptop facilities would also be improved.

She also assured library and computer lab users that there would be minimal disruption to services and facilities during the construction period.

"The bulk of construction work is scheduled to take place during the summer semester break. The library will maintain its normal opening hours, however some noise will be unavoidable. Computers will remain available throughout the renovation and the former Facilities and Services offices have been relocated to the ground floor of Building 902."
