Innovation in ePress technology wins award |

Michele Sabto, Manager, Monash University ePress, has been selected as winner of the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) Achievement Award for 2005. The award is made annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the achievement of the CAUL strategic agenda. Michele's award was based on her innovative use of leading edge information technology to develop a self-sustaining model for the online publishing of scholarly material. This is a significant contribution to the CAUL strategic goal of assisting research by making research resources widely available. The xml content conversion technology, customised with the assistance of a consultant, has enabled the ePress to bypass conventional publishing processes in creating a model that meets the needs of the research community. Content is converted directly from raw text into print-ready material making it a cost and time efficient operation. In under two years the ePress team of only three people published four scholarly journals and two major books. Commenting on her award, Michele says it cements the idea of a natural relationship between the role of the library and the publication of online 'scholarly' information. "The ePress is an interesting public-interest publishing space, built on the library's existing knowledge of the storage and presentation of digital content. Our development and use of xml technology takes this a step further." Michele has been invited to accept her award and give a presentation on her work to CAUL in Canberra this year. She has also been invited by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) to speak on the ePress at a seminar titled The New Publishers in London in March. 13 January 2006 current news : 2008 : 2007 : 2006 : 2005 : 2004 : 2003 : 2002 : pre-2002 Ask a question Phone +61 3 9905 5054 or use our enquiry services ask.monash for Monash students and staff | ask.monash for visitors, or online chat. |
