All the info for returning students !

Welcome back and best wishes from the library for a successful year, As we continue to upgrade our services, buildings and technology, we would like to bring your attention the following changes in 2007:

Library opening hours extended
Opening hours have been extended with full details available on the library web site and in the 2007 hours cards. Some of the changes include:

  • Increased weekend opening hours prior to exams each semester at all Clayton campus libraries
  • Clayton opening times have been standardised to 8.30am Monday to Friday all year round
  • Caulfield Library will open at 8:00am Monday to Friday all year round
  • Peninsula Library will be open for an additional hour during summer semester Sundays and for an additional three hours on Sundays during exam periods. Peninsula Library will be closed on summer semester Saturdays
  • Pharmacy Library will open at 8:00am Monday to Friday during semester.

Increase in Reserve loan times
Changes have been made to reserve borrowing aimed at creating longer loan times for some books and increasing availability of required readings:

  • In all branches where 3-day loans were previously offered, these are now 7-day loans
  • 2-hour loans are now 3-hour loans in all branches
  • No holds are permitted for either 7-day or 3-hour loans in any branch.

Changeover of ID cards
If your student ID card was issued in 2005 or earlier, you may be requested to switch to the new student ID card.
You need to be aware that if library photocopying and printing credits are stored on your existing student ID card they will not transfer automatically to the new ID card. Therefore you should make sure to retain your old card and continue to use it in the library for photocopying and printing until the credit is used up.

SMS Service
The library is once again offering its free and convenient SMS service which gives you the opportunity to access information via SMS about library items ready for pickup. The service now provides brief title information regarding the item.

Registering for this service is easy and totally online at https://my.monash.edu.au/library/services/sms/. Registration is valid for one semester only so you will need to re-register each semester.
Please note that details of loans due and overdue fines are no longer provided by the SMS service.

Library catalogue update
A "new titles" listing is now available within the catalogue. This new feature provides a weekly snapshot of new titles included in the catalogue. This is also available as an RSS feed.

Pharmacy Library relocates
Pharmacy Library has relocated to the ground floor of 407 Royal Parade in preparation for the refurbishment of the library’s existing space in the Manning Building. All Pharmacy print journals dated prior to 2006 are in off-site storage. Many of the journals are available electronically, but if not undergraduate students can request a copy of an article via the intercampus photocopy service for a fee.

New printing and copying system for Gippsland
A new photocopying system has been introduced at Gippsland campus, which is also being used for all printing in the library.

This system is already operating at all other Monash campuses in Victoria, so photocopying credits can be transferred across campuses. Credit can be loaded onto a Monash student identification card or a photocopy card at an autoloader machine. In line with other branches, the cost of photocopies and printing has increased from 8 cents to 12 cents per A4 sheet.

A few quick reminders:

  • Help with using the library’s resources is available through a number of formats including Online chat, ask.monash, online and printed material and in-branch assistance. Book for many useful library classes via the my.monash portal at https://my.monash.edu.au/news-and-events/bookings/library/
  • Please do not bring any hot food into the library. Cold snack foods and drinks with lids are permitted in some areas
  • Rechargeable copy cards can be purchased from the library for $2. These can be used as an alternative to your ID cards for copying/printing.
  • Many of the library’s new PCs do not have floppy disk drives, so save your assignments using usb drives and cds. Many usb’s get handed in at the library every year, so please put your name on them.
