Early Pacific history on show |
||
|
The Pacific,
the latest Rare Books exhibition at Monash University Library, was opened
last week by anthropologist, Dr Matt Tomlinson.
On display until February, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the rare historical literature of travel and discovery of the Pacific held by the Library. A virtual tour of the exhibition can be viewed online. Marine charts, illustrations of natives engaging in traditional rituals and early travellers’ personal accounts are some of the features of this exhibition, which ranges from the early eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. It covers European discovery and exploration of the Pacific, the activities of the missionaries, traders and blackbirders, as well as accounts by those who visited for pleasure. Dr Tomlinson says that the historic material exhibited can illuminate current discussions. Understanding of developments in present day Fiji, for example, can be increased by reading of historic material about those islands. 2 October 2007 current news : 2008 : 2007 : 2006 : 2005 : 2004 : 2003 : 2002 : pre-2002 Ask a question Phone +61 3 9905 5054 or use our enquiry services ask.monash for Monash students and staff | ask.monash for visitors, or online chat. |
