Library embraces the need to evolve

Significant change took place in the Library in 2007, as described in the Library Annual Report.

Of particular note was the Library’s new responsibility for the University’s language and learning services, which resulted in the establishment of the Learning Skills Unit as part of the Library’s operations. The learning skills service model has learning skills advisers based in each branch library and is very closely aligned with the existing learning commons concept and the Library’s information literacy programs. This model provides a platform for information services staff and learning skills advisers to work with each other and with academic staff to ensure integration of learning skills and information literacy into coursework.

Change is evident in other aspects of the Library’s operation. While some traditional uses of the Library have been declining, the number of library visits rose by 3.5%. The number of accesses to electronic resources increased by almost 300%. This dramatic increase reflects the growth in the electronic resources collection, improved access to the resources through federated searching tools such as Multisearch and increased awareness of these resources on the part of library users, according to Cathrine Harboe-Ree, University Librarian. In 2007, 50% of all expenditure on acquisitions by the Library was on electronic resources, an increase of over 10% on the previous year. Electronic resources provided to staff and students on and off campus include databases, electronic journals, and e-books.

Use of Monash University Lectures Online has also grown now that the more popular mp3 format for downloading and podcasting of lectures has been added to the existing audiostreaming service.
