Pharmacy Library opens in a festive atmosphere

On Monday 1 December the refurbished CL Butchers Pharmacy Library was formally opened by Professor Peter Stewart, the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, at a lively function attended by faculty and library staff.

The library refurbishment marks a major step towards the renovation of the entire Manning Building. It also marks a fifth milestone for the Monash University Library’s ongoing efforts to provide library spaces that respond to changing teaching and learning styles.

The Pharmacy Library will continue to maintain its research focus as the premier source of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences information within Australia. The close and continuing relationship between the library and faculty is demonstrated by its position on the faculty’s main corridor which will soon display information about the history of the College and the profession in Victoria. The entrance to the library is enhanced by a culture wall showcasing historic Pharmacy artefacts. The refurbished and expanded library lies at the heart of the campus.

The library originally opened in 1972 as part of the Victorian College of Pharmacy but traces its roots back to 1873 when the Pharmaceutical Society founded a library in Swanston Street, Melbourne. It is named in memory of Charles Leslie Butchers, a pioneer who was a driving force in pharmacy for over 40 years and generous supporter of the library, as described in the Victorian College of Pharmacy's 125 stories for 125 years.

University Librarian, Cathrine Harboe-Ree, reported at the opening that today’s students are very enthusiastic about their new learning facility, a typical first reaction being to stop stock still in the entrance and exclaim “Wow!”.
