What’s new for returning students 2009

Welcome back and best wishes from the Library for a successful year. There are a few important changes to note this year:

Catalogue

  • The system has been upgraded in late 2008. Check out the new look and functionalities.
Resources
  • A new Teaching Materials Collection has been incorporated into the Matheson Library at Clayton to support professional placements within the Faculty of Education.
  • Even more electronic books will be provided this year – over 240,000 are already provided allowing students in all curriculum areas to access texts they require online.
  • Electronic access to journal archives has increased markedly to complete the years for which many journal titles are available online. The full text of many journals is now available online back to the starting date of each journal.
  • BestCase, a web-based case law research service containing Canada's leading law reports, is now available through the Library’s online resources.
Facilities and equipment
  • Print express terminals have been installed at all libraries (except Pharmacy).
  • 180 extra power points have been installed at Caulfield Library and 16 new power-enabled tables at the Law Library for lap top users.
  • Wireless printing commences at Berwick Library and Learning Commons
Loans
  • Postgraduate, higher degree by research and honours students can now borrow up to 40 items. Undergraduate students continue to borrow 20 items.
  • If a book or other item is available on the shelf at your library it is quickest and most efficient to find it and borrow it yourself. Requesting a hold should be reserved for items only available at another campus or when all copies of an item are on loan. Library staff will cancel any holds placed on items that are on the shelf at the selected pick up location.
  • At Matheson Library, a new category of 'overnight' books will be available this year. These will have a yellow identifying sticker on them and the fines for late return will be $5 per day. Also, holds have been moved to the Reserve Collection for pick up.
Services
  • The Library can help you with information research and learning skills. Find out about classes and drop-in sessions.
