Innovative news media product available to faculty staff

Academic staff can now legally obtain Australian television news content for teaching without having to physically record the program themselves or purchase it from the television company or another provider.

This can be done through Informit TVNews, the prize-winning online media database that provides a synopsis of and access to news, current affairs and selected documentaries on ABC, ABC 2, SBS, 7, 9 and 10.

Monash’s membership of the Screeenrights program allows academic staff and students to search, browse and be alerted to news stories and programs in InformitTVNews, with the option to download, save or email the videos immediately to desktop. The archive, which commenced in September 2007, grows 24/7; stories are continuously updated to create the most comprehensive record of Australian TV news.

To use news media from the database for teaching, academic staff must conform with legal requirements under the Screenrights licence; television footage used for teaching must be labelled in particular ways and if made available online for students of a particular unit it must be restricted to enrolled students and authorised staff.

Informit TVNews is available from the Library databases page.
