New learning skills service for Monash South Africa

Students can now access learning skills services and resources to help improve their academic performance and approach to study through the Monash South Africa Library and Learning Commons.

Learning support to students became the responsibility of the Library in South Africa in 2009 after it was transferred from the Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT).

Building on the concept of the learning commons, the new learning skills services integrate learning support with other support services available in or through the library, such as development of information research skills and IT support.

Learning skills are core skills and attributes that tertiary students need to learn within an academic environment and disciplinary context. These include skills in the areas of: study, reading and exam preparation; listening and note-taking in lectures and seminars; oral communication and presentation; analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking; and academic essay, report and thesis writing.

Learning skills adviser Karen Petrenko has already visited Australia to see how learning skills operates in Monash’s Victorian campus libraries. Ms Petrenko will work collaboratively with faculties, librarians and other service providers at Monash South Africa to develop services and programs that meet the needs of students.

For more information about learning skills services and resources, visit the Library website or if in South Africa enquire at the Library and Learning Commons.
