Individual newspapers

Some of the major newspapers provide indexes to previous years. Those that do are listed in the Notes field of the newspaper entry on this site. Some indexes cover a small number of years (for example The Age) while some cover centuries (for example Palmer's index to the Times).

Collections of newspapers

Monash University Library subscribes to a number of electronic databases which index newspapers and other publications.

Australian newspapers are indexed in the following databases:

Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS) Full text
includes selective coverage of major Australian newspapers.
ELibrary (formerly Electric Library Australasia)
Australian newspapers include: Adelaide Advertiser, The Australian, Courier Mail, Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Mercury and Weekly Times. The full text is also available in this database.
Factiva
includes all Australian newspapers except the Tasmanian Mercury and provides full text.
Media scan
indexes Australian newspapers from 1991.
NewsBank
full-text of of many local, regional, and national newspapers.

Overseas newspapers are indexed in the following databases:

BHI : British Humanities Index
indexes major British newspapers eg The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, and The Observer.
ELibrary
includes major overseas newspapers and contains full text
Factiva
the major database for newspapers worldwide and contains full text
ProQuest
particularly useful for North American newspapers and contains full text
