Guidelines regarding food, drink, noise and mobile phones

To enable a functional and pleasant environment for library users the following guidelines are in place at all eight branches of the Monash University Library:

  • Food
Cold snack food is allowed throughout the library except in reserve and special collections, near computers and in signed quiet study areas. Please use bins for waste.
  • Drink
Covered drinks (with lids) are allowed throughout the library except in reserve and special collections and near computers. Please use bins for waste.
  • Noise
A moderate level of noise is permitted throughout the library except in signed quiet study areas and during the lead up to exams.
  • Mobile phones
Mobile phones set to vibrate or silent are allowed throughout the library except in signed quiet study areas.
Important note: Due to their smaller size, the Berwick Library at Berwick campus and the CL Butchers Pharmacy Library at Parkville campus, are zoned as quiet study areas. As such, the above guidelines for quiet study areas are in force throughout the building.

Non-compliance

  • Library users who do not comply with guidelines may be asked to leave the library by staff. In exceptional cases a disciplinary hearing may follow.
  • If you are unhappy with the library's disciplinary processes or with your treatment by library staff you may file a formal grievance with the branch manager of the relevant branch library. You can also contact your Student Rights officer in the relevant student union or association for advice.

Compliments, complaints, comments and suggestions regarding these guidelines are welcome. Email or telephone + 61 3 9905 5054. Your feedback will be directed to the relevant library staff member.
