“There needs to be more computers available, sometimes it takes 30-45 minutes to get a computer.”
“A time limit on computers or monitoring of what students are doing on computers is needed. ”
“Additional power points are required for laptops. The wireless signal in the group study rooms is weak and some parts of the room do not have sufficient signal strength. "
"I hate it when I want to do some work people are on the computer playing games or on facebook!" |
- We continue to improve our computer ratio
We base the ratio on the number of effective full-time students in each campus and in each of the faculties. We have to balance the competing need for computers, laptops and a study environment and all of our libraries have space constraints.
- We are improving our facilities for laptop users
We have added more than 600 power points across several branches to meet the demand of laptop users. As power points are added, work spaces are also refurbished. Wireless networking and the equipment that allows it is constantly being reviewed and updated. There was a replacement of all the WAPs (wireless access points) across our libraries last year to allow for more reliable connectivity and for more simultaneous connections. We are working on implementing wireless printing.
- We are looking for the best approach to manage social networking
At Monash it is widely recognised that social networking is integrated into the learning style of today’s university students. We acknowledge that excessive use of IT facilities for this purpose is putting pressure on high-demand computer resources particularly in the libraries. This issue is currently being discussed in various areas at Monash.
“Where possible we endeavour to meet the demand for computer usage and provide a balance between study space, collections and laptop usage. Increased access to laptops and improved wireless facilities will mean a different demand for our space in the future. The Library will continue to strive to improve our facilities.“
