Loan conditions - Monash University staff and students

Staff including honoraries and Higher Degree by Research postgraduates

  • How many items can I borrow? Unlimited
  • For how long? Six weeks.(Some high demand items, indicated by labels, have a loan period of 14 days or less). Exception: The loan period for items borrowed via the Document Delivery Service remains at four weeks.
  • Can I renew my loans? Yes, six times unless items are requested by another library user. Note: Only two renewals are permitted for videos, DVDs and CDs. Renewals of high demand materials are only permitted if they have 14 day loan labels and these renewals are for two weeks only.
  • Can I return items to any branch? Yes, return chutes are accessible 24 hours at all campuses. N.B. Overnight and reserve loans must be returned to the branch from which they were borrowed.
  • What if I have an overdue item? You won't be able to borrow or renew loans. Fines will apply.
  • Can I request items already out on loan or at another campus library? Yes. Place a 'Hold' request in Search
  • Can I borrow from other Victorian academic libraries? Yes, through the CAVAL reciprocal borrowing program. You must go there in person - ask library staff for a CAVAL card. Note: Staff, postgraduates, and honours students may also use the Document delivery service.
  • Can I have items posted to me? Only certain groups of library users are eligible for postal loans, including students eligible for off-campus services and staff if your office is at an off-campus location and you are on the Monash University payroll.
  • Can I borrow journals? Bound volumes - for one day; single issues - ask Library staff. Exception: journals cannot be borrowed at the Pharmacy Library
  • Can I borrow videos, DVDs and CDs? Yes. Note: A maximum of eight items in this group of formats may be borrowed concurrently. Some items are restricted to particular groups of library users by copyright conditions.
  • Can I borrow 'high demand' items? Yes, as described on the label of this material.
    Notes:  Overnight loans are available for some items in Reserve Collections. Ask Library staff for details. No postal loans, renewals or holds are permitted on these items. Exception: Alumni are not eligible to borrow 'high demand' items.
  • Can I borrow Centre for Gippsland Studies material? No. Items can be viewed at any branch library at the discretion of the Manager, Centre for Gippsland Studies (CGS).
  • Are there any exceptions to these rules? Students on medical or nursing placement or teaching rounds may be permitted to borrow for longer. Ask Library staff for details.

Postgraduates by coursework and honours students, and Open Universities Australia (Monash) postgraduates

  • How many items can I borrow? 60 items
  • For how long? Four weeks. (Some high demand items, indicated by labels, have a loan period of 14 days or less). Note: For students eligible for off-campus services, the initial loan period is six weeks to include postal delivery time each way. Exception: The loan period for items borrowed via the Document Delivery Service remains at four weeks

Library fines accrue for overdue items for all library users. Avoid fines by:

  • collecting a date due slip when you borrow
  • checking your 'My Loans' by signing into Search and renewing or returning items before due date
