Loan conditions - Monash University staff and students

Staff, Postgraduates (including open Universities Australia (Monash)) and Honours

  • How much can I borrow? 40 items
  • For how long? 28 days
  • Can I renew my loans? Yes, up to 6 times per item
    Note: Videos, DVDs and CDs up to two renewals only
  • Can I request items already out on loan or at another campus library? Yes. Place a Hold request in the library catalogue
  • Can I borrow from other Victorian academic libraries? Yes, through the CAVAL reciprocal borrowing program. You must go there in person - ask library staff for a CAVAL card.
    Note: Staff and HDR Postgraduates may also use the Document delivery service.
    EXCEPTIONS: Enhancement, Monash College and Open Universities Australia students are not eligible for CAVAL membership. (You may register at another academic library as an individual member for a fee)
  • Can I have items posted to me? No.
    EXCEPTIONS: Off-campus students:
    Yes, some limitations apply. Open Universities Australia postgraduates: Yes, if you live in Australia. Postgraduates: Yes, if you are an off-campus student - some limitations apply. Staff: Yes, if your office is at an off-campus location and you are on the Monash University payroll
  • Can I borrow journals? Yes - Bound volumes for 1 day; Single issues - ask library staff. EXCEPTION: journals cannot be borrowed at the Pharmacy branch library
  • Can I borrow videos, DVDs and CDs? Yes - up to 8 items. Some items are restricted by copyright conditions
    Note: Videos, DVDs and CDs up to two renewals only
  • Can I borrow 'high demand' items? Yes, if it has a '7 day loan (current year)' label on it. Overnight loans available for some Reserve Collection items
    Note: No postal loans, renewals or holds permitted
  • Can I borrow Centre for Gippsland Studies material? No, however items can be viewed at the Gippsland Library or at Rare Books, Matheson Library, Clayton campus, at the discretion of the Manager, Centre for Gippsland Studies (CGS)
  • Are there any exceptions to these rules? Students on nursing placement or teaching rounds may be permitted to borrow for longer. Ask at the loans desk of any branch Library.

Undergraduates (including Open Universities Australia (Monash))

  • How much can I borrow? 20 items
  • For how long? 14 days. Off-campus undergraduates: initial loan 28 days (includes postal delivery time each way)
  • Can I renew my loans? Yes, up to 3 times per item. Off-campus undergraduates: renewals: 2 weeks only
    Note: Videos, DVDs and CDs up to two renewals only
  • Can I request items already out on loan or at another campus library? Yes. Place a Hold request in the library catalogue
  • Can I borrow from other Victorian academic libraries? Yes, through the CAVAL reciprocal borrowing program. You must go there in person - ask library staff for a CAVAL card.

Library fines accrue for overdue items for all library users. Avoid fines by:

  • collecting a date due slip when you borrow
  • checking your My loans in the library catalogue and renewing or returning items before due date
  • see making payments for how to pay library fines
