Finding theses

Monash University

The Sir Louis Matheson Library keeps a copy of all Masters and PhD theses submitted to the faculties of Arts, Economics and Education at Monash. Honours theses are not kept in the library. The manuscript (ie paper) version of each thesis is kept in the Rare Books Collection; a microfiche version of almost all theses is also made and kept in the Music and Multimedia Collection. If you wish to read a thesis, you are normally required to use the microfiche version if one is available. PhD theses from 2000 onwards will be digitised and made accessible via the ARROW repository.

A list of Monash University theses 1961-1986 arranged by author, subject and department is available in library Reference collections, check particularly v. 1. Humanities and social sciences and law.

In the library catalogue use Search and type in a topic keyword such as ethnography and thesis, add the word monash if you are just looking for Monash University theses, for example:

For more detail about finding theses view the library online tutorial, How to find a thesis. Detailed printed guides Locating theses and Preparing and writing theses are available from the stands near the Matheson Library information desk.

Many recent theses are available in digital format, which makes them quick and inexpensive to acquire. If not available in digital format they are microfilmed or printed upon request which can take up to 2 months. The microfilm costs around $100.00. Supervisors will need to approve document delivery requests for theses.
