Major social science data archives

  • Social Science Data Archives, Australian National University. The Social Science Data Archives (SSDA) was set up to collect and preserve computer-readable data relating to social, political and economic affairs. Data sets resulting from research by academic, government and private organisations and individuals have been deposited in the archive.
  • Coombspapers, ANU Social Sciences Research Data Bank, an electronic repository of the social science and humanities papers, bibliographies, directories, theses, abstracts and other high-grade research material produced (or deposited) at the research schools of Pacific Studies and Social Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra. In addition, Coombspapers serve also as a major Australian electronic repository of quality research materials dealing with the South-East and North-East Asian areas, as well as Buddhism, Taoism and other oriental religions. Included are WWW Virtual Libraries for Asian Studies, Demography and Population Studies, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam.
  • CESSDA, Council of European Social Science Data Archives promotes the acquisition, archiving and distribution of electronic data for social science teaching and research in Europe. It encourages the exchange of data and technology and fosters the development of new organisations in sympathy with its aims. It associates and cooperates with other international organisations sharing similar objectives.
  • Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), established in 1962, is an integral part of the infrastructure of social science research. ICPSR maintains and provides access to a vast archive of social science data for research and instruction, and offers training in quantitative methods to facilitate effective data use. To ensure that data resources are available to future generations of scholars, ICPSR preserves data, migrating them to new storage media as changes in technology warrant. In addition, ICPSR provides user support to assist researchers in identifying relevant data for analysis and in conducting their research projects.   • Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS), UK social science research.
  • The Gallup Organization, US, answers to more than 136,000 questions, and responses from more than 3.5 million people interviewed by The Gallup Poll since 1935, requires registration.
  • New Zealand Social Research Data Archives, (NZSRDA).
  • National Data Network, The NDN vision is for the best utilisation of, and return on investment from, survey and administrative information resources by:  a. providing Users (eg planners, researchers, policy analysts, project managers, evaluators) with an improved means of finding and accessing information resources, particularly those information resources that aren't publicly available, and  b. providing Custodians of information resources with a means of giving greater visibility and wider access to their information resources, while continuing to give close attention to access and use conditions.
  • PolicyArchive, PolicyArchive is a comprehensive digital library of public policy research containing over 12,000 documents PolicyArchive  is a free, and open digital archive of foundation-funded and other public policy research.
